Graphic design is meant to convey information in the clearest and most convincing of ways. This means that content is key and can provide students a chance to combine both writing and design skills to create truly meaningful work.
Students will select a controversial topic that they feel strongly about and create a non-biased informative foldout pamphlet/poster for a targeted audience.
- Establishing an opinion but also viewing both sides of an argument
- Being able to present information in a non-biased manner
- Providing research in a compelling and convincing manner
- 11″ x 17″ foldout pamphlet/poster
- 11 x 17″ printer paper
- Classroom computers equipped with creative software like the Adobe Suite or Corel Draw
In this assignment, students are asked to design an awareness campaign for a controversial issue of their choosing that is non-biased and informative. Sample topics can include: global warming, drug enforcement, civil rights, etc… though it is up to the student to choose a topic that interests them.
Students, along with choosing a topic, should do research about the topic in order to get a better understanding of the current opinions/issues. Once the students have compiled their research, they can begin to form an idea of what information their audience should know.
They will create a joint pamphlet/foldout poster that gives facts and figures about the topic and informs their target audience.
In the end, students will evaluate each other’s posters/pamphlets as a group. They will look for: which poster is the most informative, which was the most eye-catching, which was the most intriguing, and which was the most clever solution.
